Paste a prompt or any text to get a quick estimate of how many tokens it uses in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other AI tools. Tokens are the small pieces of text AI models read, and they decide how much fits in a conversation. This tool runs in your browser and does not send your text anywhere.
This is an estimate. Each model counts tokens a little differently, and text in languages such as Urdu, Arabic or Hindi usually uses more tokens per word than English.
What is a token?
A token is a small chunk of text, often a short word, part of a longer word, or a punctuation mark. In English, one token is about four characters or three quarters of a word. So 100 tokens is roughly 75 words.
Why token counts matter
- Context limit: every AI model can only read and remember a limited number of tokens in one conversation.
- Cost: paid AI tools and APIs often charge by tokens used, for both your prompt and the answer.
- Quality: very long prompts can bury the important instruction. Shorter, clearer prompts often work better. See our guide on how to write a prompt for ChatGPT.
Frequently asked questions
How many words is 1,000 tokens?
In English, about 750 words. The exact number depends on the text and the model.
Is this the exact token count?
No. It is a close estimate based on characters and words. For exact numbers, use the token counter provided by the AI tool you are using.
Do spaces and punctuation count as tokens?
Punctuation usually counts. Spaces are normally included as part of the following word, so they rarely add extra tokens on their own.
