Geyser and Water Pump Running Cost Calculator

Find out what your water heater or water pump costs to run. Pick the appliance or enter its watts, how long it is on, and your price per unit. You get the energy in kWh and the cost per day, month and year.

Enter your values to see the result.

A geyser with a thermostat heats only part of the time, so try a duty cycle of 40 to 60 percent. Pumps with a float or pressure switch also run only when needed. Bills may add fixed charges and taxes.

Formulas and assumptions

  • Energy per day (kWh): watts times hours times duty cycle, divided by 1000
  • Energy per month: energy per day times days of use
  • Cost: energy in kWh times your price per unit
  • Pump watts: 1 HP is about 746 W of output, and typical small pumps draw around 750 W

Example

A 3000 W geyser switched on for 2 hours a day and heating the whole time uses 6 kWh a day, or 180 kWh over 30 days. At 40 per unit that is 240 per day and 7,200 per month.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does an electric geyser use?

A 3000 W geyser uses 3 kWh for every hour it is actually heating. With a thermostat it may heat for only half the time it is switched on.

How can I cut geyser cost?

Use a timer, insulate the tank and pipes, lower the thermostat setting or switch to a solar or gas water heater.

How do I know my pump watts?

Look at the nameplate for watts or for amps and volts. If it only shows HP, multiply by about 750 and expect a little more for small pumps.
