How reading time is calculated
Reading time is the number of words divided by your reading speed in words per minute. Most adults read silently at roughly 200 to 250 words per minute, so this tool uses 238 by default. Technical or unfamiliar text is read more slowly, so change the speed if needed.

- Blog post: 800 to 1,500 words is common for guides.
- Email: under 150 words is easier to read.
- Meta description: about 155 characters.
- Tweet or short post: 280 characters.

How accurate is the sentence count?
It counts text ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Abbreviations such as "Dr." can add an extra sentence, so treat it as a close estimate.
What is a good reading time for a blog post?
Most readers are happy with 3 to 7 minutes for a how-to guide. Longer is fine if the content is useful and well organized.
